Papermark Alternative

Papermark tracks views.
Apdf captures the full engagement.

Page views and seconds are where Papermark ends. Apdf captures annotations, form fills and every re-read — streamed into your stack, so you follow up while interest is still hot.

Why teams outgrow Papermark.

Papermark tells you a page was viewed and for how long. The moment you need more — what readers marked up, filled in, or came back to — there's nothing there.

Tracking stops at the view

Pages and seconds — that's the ceiling. No annotations, no form fills, no clicks: what readers actually do never becomes data.

Webhooks without depth

Lifecycle webhooks, gated to the €59/mo plan — no page, session or content events. “Automations” means wiring up Zapier.

A viewer, not an engine

Zero PDF operations — no HTML→PDF, no merge, no OCR. Papermark can only share files you've already made.

Open source, with an asterisk

Data rooms, AI and workflows sit under a commercial license — self-hosting them means an Enterprise deal. Seats cost extra, too.

What you get instead.

Everything you use Papermark's tracking for — secure links, page analytics, per-recipient identity — plus the engagement layer it never built.

Own the signal

Papermark's webhooks announce lifecycle — created, viewed. Apdf streams behavior: every read, click and annotation as a typed event, into any system you run.

Both speak MCP. Theirs pulls view counts; Apdf hands agents the full read — sessions, dwell time, annotations — so follow-up lands while interest is hot.

Side by side

Apdf vs. Papermark

Both track your documents. Only one captures what readers actually do.

Questions

Switching, answered.

For document tracking, yes — and it goes further: annotations, form submissions and every reader event captured as data, not just page views. What Papermark has that we don't is data rooms with NDA gating and granular permissions, plus an open-source core. If you're running a fundraising or M&A data room, Papermark is a fine choice. Apdf is for teams who need reader engagement in their own product, CRM and agents.

The core is AGPL open source, but the self-hosted reality has fine print: data rooms, AI and workflows live under a commercial license that requires a paid Enterprise subscription, and the analytics pipeline depends on a separate proprietary SaaS account. Someone also has to run and update the deployment. Apdf's free plan is hosted — no servers, no license carve-outs.

Papermark genuinely tracks page views: time per page, completion, downloads, viewer identity. That's also where it ends — no annotations, no form fills, no content events, and its webhooks fire on lifecycle events only. Apdf streams every open, page read, click, annotation and form fill as a typed event — live, per recipient, over REST, webhooks and MCP.

Both exist, and theirs are solid for what they cover: managing data rooms and pulling view statistics, from the €59/mo plan up. The difference is what flows through: Apdf delivers engagement events as they happen, runs when→then automations natively, and includes the full PDF operations API — HTML→PDF, merge, split, compress, OCR, watermark — on every plan.

There is nothing to migrate, really. Upload or generate your documents, create a tracking link, and start sharing. Because Apdf has no lock-in and exports on demand, you are never trapped — by us or anyone else.

Yes. Apdf has a free Hobby plan with unlimited workspace members, plus a 14-day Pro trial with no card required. Papermark's free tier is single-seat — every additional team member on paid plans costs €20–33 per month.
